Well, here we are. It’s been a full year since December 17, 2022, when I decided to take the plunge, as it were, and dive on into Substack with my official welcome post, below:
Good times. It’s been fun. Bit of a rough start in the beginning, as I wrote more or less as the muse willed, which wasn’t often. Then two things happened: Substack rolled out Notes, which was fun, and in May I got into a proper writing schedule with the Weekly Muse, a newsletter that continues to this day. Currently we’re running through my Very First Novel, but once that’s done we’ll get back to the original format.
June 4th marked another Turning Point, as I began posting my first serial in the world of Edison City, the home of Gaseous Girl, the Malevolent Med-Student, and the one, the only, Captain Happily Married and Super Soccer Mom! The first episode of the serial is below: I should mention that in the new year all episodes are going behind the rolling paywall so, y’know, now’s your chance.
Another Turning Point: when I first began writing for
‘s prompts; if memory serves, the first story thus written was Smoothie, about a robot uprising.Later, Scoot’s inimitable narration of The Good Guys inspired a whole new character, Boston Saint Mike, and a run of angel stories which I plan to continue into the new year! (Seriously, y’all, it’s that good).
There’s been other high points: Suffiet Russia, After-Action Report: Hair, and the establishment of the Edison City Index, which contains the recently concluded Captain Happily Married serial.
And although I’ve left it to near the end, it’s not the least important: what I’ve enjoyed most about Substack is the people, writers and readers.
with the Ferris Island stories, and the Remembrance serial, and the Duel series, and Triverse, and the Lunar Awards, with Blackwater, everyone involved in Macabre Monday and Sci-Fi Friday and Throwback Thursday, and everyone else I’ve almost certainly forgotten to mention: all of the wonderful community here. I also want to thank very specially my extraordinary wife, , my editor and favorite person, without whom these stories wouldn’t be possible. In the proper usage of the phrase: all y’all rock.(I was told growing up if there’s more than five, it’s not y’all, it’s all y’all. So).
I’m being told that I’m near the email length limit, so I’ll wrap things up with a quick promo note: I’ve set up a Christmas special offer for new paid subscribers which you can find right here. ‘Tis the season and all.
Thanks ever so much for reading,
Until next time, as always,
Michael
Happy Day! Thanks for helping make Substack a better place!
Happy anniversary! It's been fun chatting with everyone on note and the crazy things we come up with.
