Hello, all!
I thought I’d try something new; rather than posting at random about whatever topic happens to catch my interest at that point in time, I thought I’d start a more regular schedule. So, from now on, I will send this out once a week with a collection of thoughts, writing updates, and a closing song or great quote. Should be fun, right? Okay, here we go!
First off, I think my new favorite comfort movie is Battleship. Yes, it’s the one that’s based off a board game. Is it the classic big, dumb, loud movie? Probably. But is it just fun to watch? Honestly, yeah. Not that I don’t appreciate complicated movies like, say, Interstellar or complex morality tales like Better Call Saul, but sometimes it’s just fun to watch something that’s just satisfying. Pacific Rim is one of those. Aliens invade the Earth, so we build giant robots to stop them. That’s pretty much the entire plot. Same with Battleship. Aliens have again invaded the Earth and this time it’s a combination of the U.S., Japanese, and Australian navies that has to stop them. And that’s the plot! It’s fun! Also, Liam Neeson is an admiral and Rihanna is a weapons officer that blasts an alien all to heck. Like I said, fun.
A random thought here: why do aliens always invade in the Pacific in these movies? Battle: Los Angeles, Pacific Rim, Battleship, even Monsters vs. Aliens, they always came down at or near the Pacific area. I wonder why? You never see a movie about alien warships invading Stockholm or the southern Atlantic, for example. The only exceptions I can think of are Independence Day, where the aliens invaded everywhere, and Doctor Who, which I haven’t seen in a minute but, if I recall, features aliens invading London pretty much on a regular basis. And, of course, The Avengers, where aliens invaded New York. So maybe it’s an exception that proves the rule. At any rate, let’s hope it never happens in the real world, because I’m pretty sure we’d get pasted.
Writing Update
This week I wrote a short story for the Lunar Awards contest, kept working on the Evinrude and Eulalie sequel (I introduced Evinrude’s ghost and Eulalie’s non-ghosty self), and released Kindle Vella episodes 13 of The Malevolent Med-Student, the Superhero, and the Duck, Vol. 2: The Wrath of Thrud! and 3 of Tabitha, Angel of Death. You can find the Vella stories on my author page on Amazon.
Closing Time
I’ve been brushing up on my opera lately as I’ve been writing a supervillain named Lady Wagnerian; this reminded me of the aria “La donna e mobile”, which Wikipedia tells me is from Rigoletto. I mostly remembered it because it once hilariously appeared on Voyager, as sung by The Doctor, probably my favorite character. Enjoy.
Until next time,
Michael
