The creature poked an eyestalk just above the water, then ducked back underneath. It was dark and a bit rainy yet this morning; the usual crowd of tourists and the like hadn’t shown up in full force. Only one or two lingered about, fidgeting in their jackets and fiddling with odd-shaped cameras.
The creature thought for a minute. It hadn’t done this since…when? Ten years? Twenty? It wasn’t sure. The bottom of the water was so lovely to have a rest in; one lost track of time down there. It searched its memory, trying to think. Was it the time with the boat with the loud noises, or the man with the hat? That was the trouble with all this; going too often meant risking being seen, too rarely and one had trouble catching up. Things were apt to slip.
Well, the creature thought, it had definitely been too long, however long it had been. Time to put on a show.
Jenkins double-checked the sonar filter on the special camera he’d got off the Internet. He was beginning to wonder if he’d paid too much. Beside him, Elroy was getting twitchy. “Lookit,” Elroy said, “It’s almost eight and I’m gettin’ soaked through, c’n I have a go? You said I could!”
“Stop whingin’,” Jenkins grunted. “Just let me get this stupid filter-”
Water geysered out of the lock. In the midst of the spray rose a long green-like something that coiled about and just as suddenly dove back into the water with another tremendous splash.
Both the men stood utterly astonished on the shore. After a second, as the waters slowly settled, Elroy turned to his superior. “Did you see-”
“Shut up,” growled Jenkins. He had been so surprised he hadn’t even got the picture.
Down below the creature smiled. Well, that had been fun.
